VRLA/SLA Battery di Indonesia dikenal dengan sebutan Aki/battery kering adalah battery tertutup (Sealed). Karena sifatnya tertutup maka uap yang keluar sangat sedikit (terjadi rekombinasi) sehingga tidak perlu menambah cairan/electrolyte selama masa pemakaian battery tersebut. Istilah valve (katub) mengacu pada katub yang ada di VRLA Battery sebagai saran keluarnya uap untuk mencegah tekanan dalam battery terlalu besar yang dapat menyebabkan battery menggelembung.
Penggolongan VRLA Battery berdasarkan Teknologinya dibagi menjadi :
1. Teknologi AGM (Absorbtive Glass Mate)
Cairan electrolyte terserap oleh separator yang berupa lembaran serat kaca (feber glass)
2. Teknologi Gel
Cairan electrolyte lebih solid dalam bentuk gel.
